PAUL JOSEPH DOUGHERTY
December 26, 1946 – September 9, 2018
Paul passed away peacefully in Nanaimo, B.C. surrounded by family following a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
He was raised in Big River, Saskatchewan and moved to B.C. in 1965. Paul was a devoted husband of 47 years and he and Maureen created an amazing family. After arriving in B.C. he started out working at the Youbou Mill, after that he worked as the icemaker at the Duncan Curling Club until starting his 35 year career at the District of North Cowichan, retiring from there in 2002. In his retirement, he and Maureen spent many sunny winters in Palm Springs. He loved visiting with family and friends, cooking (his onion soup was legendary), making wine and beer, politics and playing cards with friends. He also enjoyed good discussions with his coffee shop buddies. He loved to watch CFL football and still cheered for his favourite team the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He spent part of each day walking the beach at Piper’s Lagoon chatting along the way with the locals. We always knew he was near when we heard him singing and whistling along the way.
In February of this year, Paul had a call to explore his Irish ancestry. He and his son-in-law, Cooper, toured Ireland and went to Galway and Belfast on Irish Rail. They visited the sites of the Titanic, Guinness Storehouse, Jamieson Distillery and St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the Temple Bar. We all think he may have kissed the Blarney Stone in a different life as his passion was to talk with every person he encountered.
Predeceased by his parents, Joe and Alice and brothers Delor and Pat. Survived by his wife Maureen, daughters Michelle (Gerry), Erin (Cooper), brother Roger (Mavis) and grandchildren Megan, Max and Olivia as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. Forever remembered by us all.
A celebration of life will follow at a later date. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorial contributions may be made to B.C. Cancer Agency, or the Palliative Care Unit, Nanaimo Regional Hospital.
