Tribute
In Loving Memory of Mike Kanski
Mike passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025 at Cairnsmore Place in Duncan, B.C. He was 90. He has gone to join his Lord and Savior. Mike was a very kind, caring and patient soul, who only saw and spoke of the positives in people. This was reinforced in his motto for life: “Do what you can while you can”.
Mike was born in Winnipeg Beach in Manitoba. He had seven siblings and always thought it important for everyone to know that he was the “baby” of the family! Mike moved to Duncan with his first wife Doris, after retiring from his career in public service as a mapmaker for the Manitoba Government Highways department.
Mike was very active in his community, volunteering for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Cowichan Valley Food Basket. Mike was an active member of the Duncan United Church for many years. He especially loved his role as “auctioneer” for the annual spring sale and auction. He was an active member of the A.O.T. S. (As One that Serves) church men’s group.
When Mike wasn’t volunteering he was tending his garden, tinkering around the house, out on the golf course or having coffee with his friends. Mike had an insatiable love of humor and always had a repitroire of jokes at the ready. I am sure that he is bending someone’s ear up in heaven!
He leaves behind his devoted wife Helen. His four children Don (Randi), Sandi (Brad), Darlene and John. His three grandchildren: Ian (Amanda), Brenna (Dave) and Chad. He has three great grandchildren: Jameson, Coen and Miles. Mike is also survived by his step children Ryland and Elizabeth (Liz) and step grandchildren Lynden and Nate. His sister Nell of Winnipeg and many cousins. “Papa”, Mike Kanski of “the hole in one club” will be greatly missed and remembered always in our thoughts, prayers and dreams. He definitely was a true gentleman. The family would like to thank all the wonderful folks at Cairnsmore Place for taking such great care of Mike.
Donations can be made to the Cowichan Valley Basket Society or the Alzheimer Society of B.C. A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, February 25 at 2:00 p.m. at the Duncan United Church, tea to follow.
