Dr. Bryan Clyde Bass
June 12, 1958 - January 20, 2025
Tribute
In loving memory ~
It is with profound shock and sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Bryan Bass, a devoted family physician and beloved member of the Cowichan Valley community, on January 20th, 2025, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Bryan was born on June 12th, 1958, in Terrace, British Columbia, to Margaret and Phillip Bass. He grew up alongside older sisters, Susan (Patrick) and Patricia (Ron), and his late brother, Jim (Cheryle). The family later moved to Parksville, a place that became very special to him.
Bryan began his post-secondary studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where he initially pursued forestry.
It was through medicine, however, that Bryan found his true calling, applying to UBC’s medical program, from which he graduated in 1985.
His early medical career began in Victoria, where he completed his internship before embarking on an adventure to New Zealand, where he spent two years as a Senior House Officer and surgery registrar. After returning to Vancouver Island, he completed his family medicine residency and took over Dr. Boan’s family practice, dedicating 33 years to serving his patients in the Cowichan Valley community.
In addition to his medical career, Bryan was a passionate community member, serving as president of the Rotary Club and Co-Chair of the Cowichan Division of Family Practice. He was also involved in numerous social and charitable committees, reflecting his commitment to the community he cherished. Outside of his professional life, Bryan enjoyed hiking, fishing, kayaking, boating, gardening, traveling, and reading, embodying a love for nature and the great outdoors.
Bryan leaves behind his wife of 31 years, Tanya, daughters Victoria and Olivia along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his mother, father and brother Jim. Though his life was cut short, Bryan lived fully, experiencing what many may see in three lifetimes. He will be remembered as a hardworking, kind, and selfless man—a true community hero whose absence leaves a profound void. Bryan’s legacy will continue through the lives he touched and the memories shared.
A celebration of Bryan’s life will be held on February 22, 2025, at Mellor Hall at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider planting a tree in Bryan’s memory to honour his love of nature.
The celebration will be Livestreamed via this link
