Aubrey Hamilton

June 6, 1939 - September 2, 2024

Tribute

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Aubrey Malcolm Hamilton on September 2, 2024 at the age of 85, at Victoria General Hospital in Victoria, British Columbia, after a long illness.

Aubrey was born on June 6, 1939 in Bible Hill, Nova Scotia. During his youth, he assisted his father with the family’s panel truck delivery service throughout the Bible Hill and Truro areas. Aubrey, in his teens, continued working with his father, who began a contractual delivery service with the T. Eaton Co. Ltd. Although economic hardship led him to drop out of high school, with a natural mind for geometry, mathematics, and electrical engineering, Aubrey spent his early career, commencing in 1959, as an aircraft electronics specialist, and later, as a radar technician with the Royal Canadian Air Force, serving at RCAF bases and stations in Ontario and New Brunswick. After obtaining a discharge from the Air Force in 1967, Aubrey completed his GED and worked for 30 years with satellite and undersea telecoms with the Canadian Overseas Telecommunication Corporation (COTC), later known as Teleglobe Canada (1975), Memotec Data (1987), and Teleglobe Canada Incorporated (1992) – first in Mill Village, Nova Scotia, before transferring with his young family to Duncan, British Columbia in 1971 to open COTC’s West Coast earth station at Lake Cowichan, on Vancouver Island. He lived in the Cowichan Valley for the remainder of his life, amid many friends and family.

As a young man, in the 1950s, Aubrey played goaltender for the Bible Hill Dairymen on the Nova Scotia junior hockey circuit, and throughout his life was an avid snooker player. In his retirement, Aubrey returned to his passion for snooker throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, winning a gold medal in the BC Seniors Games.

Aubrey is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann (née MacPhee); son Darren Alfred of London, Ontario; daughter Laurie Ann of Victoria, BC; son Jan Kelly of Surrey, BC; son Kevin David (Tal) of Ottawa, and his two cherished grandchildren, Sean and Sarah.
