Oh Dorothy, I just read this tonight. Dad and I are so terribly sorry to hear about Eric’s passing. I know the pain you are feeling. Mom passed away on December 18th last year so almost exactly a year apart. One of our very favorite memories was of that day in Victoria we got to spend with you and Eric. I think we all cried as we waved goodbye. Mom loved you so much and that day was glorious to her and to Dad and I as well. Eric led such an fascinating life and was such a wonderful person. My heart breaks for you and your girls loss. Eric will truly be missed by so many. Dad and I are just heart broken. All of our love, thoughts and prayers are being sent to you and your girls. We love you Norman and Dawn

Dorothy – So sorry to hear about Eric. My condolences to you, Lynn, Karina and Ken. Eric was such a great contribution to the science at the Freshwater Institute. He created what was arguably the best freshwater libraries in the world and did the same for the Arctic marine ecosystem. He was always every helpful to scientists and seemed to have an unequaled source of information at the front of his mind at all times.

From: Jack Mathias
Relation: Scientist at the Freshwater Institute

Dear Dorothy, Lynn, Karina and Ken, please accept my sympathy for your grief. I remember Eric as the librarian of the Freshwater Institute where I worked for many years. He was disciplined, he was organized and he liked order and precision. As such he was a wonderful librarian who always had information at his fingertips. He was always friendly and listened carefully and helpfully to the many requests I made to him for books and papers over the years. As an information specialist, and with his biological training he was a pillar of the scientific institute in which I and my colleagues
worked.

From: Don Cobb
Relation: Colleague at Freshwater Institute

My condolences to the Marshall family. Mr Marshall (he has always been Mr Marshall to me as a young biologist out of respect for his professionalism). Mr Marshall was always so helpful to and patient with us biologists in accessing relevant literature and other obscure requests we had. The naming of the Eric Marshall library at FWI was the ultimate tribute to this fine gentleman.

From: John Craig
Relation: Research Scientist

Eric had left the Windermere Laboratory of the FBA when I joined in 1973. He had, however, left his mark in providing a superb library in freshwater biology.
We met in 1984 when I joined the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg. Again there was a superb library which my wife said was organised like clockwork. The library resources were wonderful for writing papers and books. I returned to Scotland with my family but heard Eric had moved to BC. Hopefully his years there were happy and fulfilling.
