Nick Michael Woywitka
February 5, 1951 - February 10, 2023
Tribute
Nick Woywitka, an Award-winning Builder and Construction Manager known for his innovative commercial and home designs and for beautifying Vancouver Island for decades, unexpectedly passed away at his home in Duncan, BC, on February 10, 2023, at 72 years old.
In 1967, Michael and Lucy Woywitka moved their family from Westlock, AB, to build a new life in the Cowichan Valley. By the early 1970s, Nick, the oldest of four siblings, relocated back to Alberta and became the youngest site superintendent for Alberta-based Carins Homes. By 1976, Nick decided to strike out on his own and founded Nicon Developments Limited.
For the past 40 years, Nick transformed himself from a one-man builder into Nicon, a multifaceted construction company, and one of the Cowichan Valley’s premiere Developers. A high-quality community builder, he took pride in creating new home designs with superior workmanship and industry-leading green technology. Nicon’s work has left an indelible mark on Vancouver Island. Some of the most notable projects include The Chemainus Theatre, Heritage Hall, and Trumpeter Pointe.
Nick was respected for lending a hand when disaster struck. He would be there alongside First Responders—his crew and family in tow; calmly helping people through their worst nightmare and then helping them rebuild, quickly and efficiently.
Nick travelled to Australia through Rotary International, where he learned unique building methods to withstand harsh weather. This experience led him to become passionate about improving humanity worldwide. Upon his return, he joined the Duncan Rotary Club and has been a long-standing member since 1995. One of his favourite Rotary activities was flipping pancakes and cooking lobsters for the community.
In his downtime, Nick spent leisurely afternoons on a golf course; traveling to sunny destinations; out on the ocean, with a line in the water chasing salmon and halibut, or helping with Rotary projects.
While immensely proud of the work that Nicon produced, he was most proud of his family. Nick would beam with pride when speaking about his daughters, Jakki Woywitka and Michelle Woywitka Rossall (Sean). Some of his happiest moments were spent with his four grandchildren, Ryker, Teagan, and twins, Harper & Sloane. Nick is also survived by his siblings, Linda (Russell) Penner, Violet (Archie) Moffatt and John Woywitka and his nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023 at 2pm at the Mellor Hall at the Cowichan Exhibition Park (7380 Trans-Canada Hwy, Duncan, BC V9L 6B1).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nick’s memory to the Rotary Foundation (https://www.rotary.org/en/donate).

I am so sorry to hear of Nick’s passing. As a friend of his daughters while growing up, I am forever grateful that I was always welcome in their home, or occasionally hanging out at the Nicon office. My best memories of Nick are being hustled into the boat, The 4 Bears, for a glassy morning ski or a thrilling blustery afternoon tube ride. It didn’t matter how late we had been up perfecting Spice Girls airband performances, if the water was glassy, you got up and grabbed a towel and waited for your time after Nick took a few quick turns on the slalom. You’d be left in awe of how close he could get his ears to the water and stand up again. The Woywitkas all knew how to ski, and if you didn’t, they would happily toss you a lifejacket and a bottle of dish soap, and do circles around your sputtering until you figured it out or the sun went down. Thank you Nick. I’m sorry it has been so long. My utmost condolences to your family, especially your daughters.
