Tribute

George Richard Pickering passed away peacefully on March 6, 2018 at the age of 95, with his family by his side.  George is survived by his loving wife of 70 years Kay, their son Brian and grandchildren; Matthew, Leah and Ella, siblings Arthur Pickering, Iris Nelson, and Shirley Pickering, nephews Walter, Earl and Leigh Large, Kevin Mahoney, niece; Valerie Lawson, Julie Burns Battaglia and Susan Nelson.

George was predeceased by his daughter Kathy who passed away in 2001, as well as sisters; Marion Large and Marjory Mahoney.

Born to Walter and Maude Pickering in Hamilton Mountain, Ontario on March 3, 1923 he was raised in Toronto and at  the age of 17, George joined the Canadian Army and served with Signal Corps from 1940 – 1945. After his time served, George had a successful career working for Christie Biscuits, Jergens Soap and Bristol Myers. In 1978, he and his family moved to Duncan, BC where he worked for the K&R Food group. Retirement did not last long, as shortly after George started a lot cleaning business and became well known for looking after local businesses until the age of 83, including; Country Grocer, Dog House Restaurant, Reggie’s Veggies, Cobblestone Pub, as well as Smith and Jones Automotive.

George was a dedicated family man with an incredible work ethic and a positive attitude which he has passed on to multiple generations. He had a passion for storytelling and having coffee all around town, as people were his favorite hobby.

Georges family would like to give a special thank you to all the staff at the Glengarry Hospital.

Please join us in celebrating George’s life at H.W. Wallace Cremation and Burial Centre, 5285 Polkey Road, Duncan, BC on Friday March 16, 2018, at 10:00am. Burial to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the BC Transplant Society.
